Playas de Fornells
A purpose-built cluster of developments around and up the hill from the beach. Although built in the style of a Spanish fishing village, it is rather clinical with a distinct lack of atmosphere. No resort centre as such. Numerous private and holiday villas with pretty gardens and fine views. 2 mls east, on a broad bay, is the original village of Fornells, with its narrow winding streets. The town retains some charm and character, especially around the harbour with its renowned fish restaurants.
Location: On the N coast, 15 mls NW of Mahon, 17 mls NW of the airport.
Position: Clinging to one side of a rugged inlet, facing gently rolling countryside and rather barren coastal plateau.
Tourist Board: www.visitbalears.com
Wide curving bay backed by dunes has fine, gently shelving sands flanked by low cliffs.
Daytime: harbour trips, sailing and windsurfing are centred around the old village; walks to ancient ruins; donkey safaris.
Nightlife: very limited.
